ONLY FOOLS LIKE ME—a sonnet
You say fools only like me tolerate Insults heaped on me by the tongues unkind. I need not my innocence demonstrate, When to the truth my accusers are blind? Let me on my path fearless proceed, Though it may be thorny, tortuous, steep. Why to the sounds of caution I pay heed? My commitment to Him I have to keep. My mortal remains may though lie in grave; My soul has to yet reach up to Him higher. Unsullied I must preserve what He gave. Why of my soul let Satan be the buyer? No stopping while I lumber up the hill. The day is done, the path untrodden still. • Written around the prompt ‘Only fools like me’ for Lexi’s contest "Lexi's Poetry Challenge" M C Gupta 10 April 2005.
