Amanda wasn’t used to being home alone at night. Usually her roommate Holly kept her company, but she was away on a camping trip with her new boyfriend. At first, Amanda looked forward to spending a quiet evening at home. She thought she would get caught up on the book she had been trying to read for ages.

Suddenly, through the thunder and wind outside, she heard a scratching noise at the window. Her heart pounded as she tried to rationalize her fear. It’s probably branches scraping the window, she thought. But she knew that there were no trees outside that were close enough to brush against the window. She got up slowly, heart still pounding in her ears, and made her way to the window. She pulled the curtain aside quickly, and looked outside. Nothing but the dark outside and rain hitting the window. She went back to her bed, but she heard scratching again. She had a sudden urge to call someone, she was that scared. This is ridiculous, she thought. I can’t be scared of a noise.

Once again, she walked over to the window. More cautiously this time, she slowly pulled the curtain aside. Standing outside was a tall dark figure in a rain jacket, the hood just big enough to cover the person’s face. Amanda’s heart jumped, and she stood there frozen, wondering what to do. Then the person lifted his hood. It was Brian.

“Oh my God! I’m going to kill you!” she said. Brian laughed.
