WAR CEMETERY
Serene silence all around, Gentle wind, rustling of leaves, Cuckoo calls in the distance, As one respectfully grieves At the unknown soldier’s grave, In the war cemetery, Solemn memorial to Those who died for their country. They waged a war to bring peace. They courted death to save life. They sacrificed their comfort To save others from the strife. As they fell they wrought havoc With their gun and with their lance. Their souls witnessed in the field A veritable death dance. Now in mother Nature’s lap, They are lulled to gentle sleep. Harken, visitor, take care, Be proud of them, but don’t weep. * Written in abcb 7-7-7-7 format * “Special Honourable Mention” award in the "HONORING OUR VETERANS" M C Gupta 30 May 2005
