"Take me home, Take me home" she said through her excited brown eyes, "I want to play ball... and Frisbee...and chase squirrels, and...hey don't pet him... he's just a Schnauzer, pet me!"
I could see it in her eyes as clear as if she were speaking to me... Heather was a mini person in a slim-line Border Collie suit just jumping at the chance to show us what she can do. And when I say "Jumping", I mean literally! Boy could this dog jump... like a kangaroo on a pogo stick! "She's gonna make a good Frisbee dog", I thought.
"We'll take her", I said to Nick & Penny, "and I guarantee you, she'll have a great home!"
I couldn't understand, as I my sons & I drove away with her in the SUV, how a grown man in his fifties could be teary-eyed about giving up a dog. She's kind of sweet, that's for sure, but real spazzy. I'd hoped they were tears of sadness from an emotional man, and not, as I may later come to find out... tears of joy! I guess only time would tell! In the meantime, we had a lot of getting acquainted to do.
Heather made it to her new home with a half of Dramamine and no problems. She hopped out of the back of the SUV, rearin' to go. "Hmmm, she stays right with the family, not a wander", I thought, "that's a nice plus. Maybe she could teach a thing or two to my other dog, Orry. Orry never did learn to listen."
Next on the agenda was to meet her new "daddy" and all the other pets.
The first thing my husband Mark said was "She's kinda small and skinny isn't she?" Of course he's of the Italian mentality, where you eat five course meals as a matter of daily practice, and you're never fat, just "big-boned".
"I guess we'll have to fatten her up... hey, can she catch a Frisbee?"
