Mr. And Mrs. Whirl come out of the adoption agency, ecstatically happy. They have just signed the adoption papers for their new son, Ward, Jr. they look forward to the day when they pick up the baby and raise him as their own.

The film examines the family through the years, contrasting the personality traits of both father and son.
