The Locket
about someone never coming home

The Locket

She wore a locket close to her heart,
the kind that carried a picture inside.
An image of a boy, brave and young,
their love as sure as the evening tide.

A promise made that he'd return one day,
their time together could be the last.
He kissed her lips one final time
then boarded a ship with a tall oak mast.

She waited each day down by the pier
with a lover's hope that he'd come home.
Searching the silent sea relentlessly,
her days spent quietly watching, alone.

There came a day in lands far away
when a hard fought battle was won.
A young boy's life ebbed where he lay
under smoke filled skies and setting sun.

She'll cry for the boy who'll never return
for the promise that they'd never part.
She'll miss the love they shared together,
still wearing a locket close to her heart.
