This is a particularly deep scripture because it has layers of interpretation. The poor in spirit refers to those who are humble of spirit and are not haughty and high minded. One has to empty themselves of pride before one can believe in Jesus Christ or admit that they need Christ. This is how we become "poor in spirit". We completely empty our hearts of all idols and focus on Jesus. Then we are saved and become part of the kingdom of heaven. Our citizenship changes from the world to heaven.Mourning in verse four has several meanings. One: It refers to the resurrection. We will see our loved ones again.
