The Bookstore
The summer glare on the window glass
is no match for the fluorescence overhead.
An ancient cooling apparatus chugs steadily,
it provides relief from the weather
while masking the noise of the street.

A door opens, a bell rings,
it provokes annoyance
rather than any hope of profit.
Eyes peer over a pair of readers
examining the interruption.

No serious intent here in this
pink sweatsuit and flushed face.
A gift for a birthday, a baby book, perhaps
a hot day and a last minute dash out of the heat.
With a sigh, the shopkeeper rises
and places a bookmark in her world.
