Depressed and Looking Up
The doctor presses on my tongue
a popsicle stick in hand
demands from me an "Ah" as sung.
This seems a silly plan.

Ah feel like ah am now depressed.
Is that what you would like?
Ah came to you to make the best
of my body, not my psyche.

I joke to lift me up a bit.
Depression's such a weight.
It helps me go, and not to quit,
to keep from being late.

I've spent much time upon my back
depressed, and from hope free.
Still lying there in all I'd lack,
perspective made me see.

Great sadness laid its upper-cut
and laid me out for the count.
while wounded to my very gut
the sky became my fount.

The stars were goals, that helped me take
a step by step each day.
Then, goals once reached, new ones I'd make,
and hope was on display.

Depression still can get me down,
but poems get me up, again.
Some weary days can cause me frown,
but hope now saves my wounded chin.
