REVELATION
REVELATION

Fashion it is to reveal;
But my torn clothes I conceal.

Flowers ask the gardener:
Why favour but one colour?

Though he owns me, in fact he
Verily depends on me.

Picked up or ignored to pale,
Roses are destined to wail.

My heart was pricked by a thorn,
Which I can’t forget, nor mourn.

• English rendering, with permission, of a "Invalid Item, an urdu ghazal by Safi , given below—

Uryaaniyat jahaan mein adaa hai, sha-ar hai,
Yaa chaak perahan mein koi sharmsaar hai.

Gulshan parast hone ka andaaz dekhiye,
Maalee ko ek rang ke phoolon se pyaar hai.

Uskaa wujood mujh pe yaqeenan hai munhasir,
Jisko har ik nafas pe mere ikhtiyaar hai.

Murjhaa gaye kabhee to kabhee chun liye gaye,
Kyaa hai khizaan gulon ke liye, kyaa bahaar hai.

Ik teer dil pe aisa lagaa thaa kabhee Safi,
Jiskee chubhan se aaj bhi dil beqaraar hai.
