When is it proper to tell someone you love them? Every culture has its taboos. Images of a damp night. Cool here but no tornadoes like in SW Kansas nor snow like in Colorado. Ever seen the shadow of a tear? My Sabres ROCK! A poem for Alfred. Do you know about Panthera's emoticons?

*Leaf1* Telling someone you love them

When is it proper to tell someone you love them? When not? Obviously a parent should always make a child aware of their love and saying it as well as showing it is best (sadly, not all do). But other relationships are not so obvious.

A relationship includes not only two people but their other relationships and society as well. Is this relationship more important than the others? What are the expectations; what is the proper language and behaviour?

Culture (I include religion here) establishes units of connection and support, but barriers as well. In most parts of the U.S. one is not allowed to have two spouses. Sexual relationships among siblings are verboten. One is discouraged to marry across racial and religious lines. It is not so in other places.

But America chooses to either be ignorant of these differences or self-righteous. To others we appear intolerant or arrogant. And perhaps we are ... but every culture has its taboos. Every culture has its taboos.

So when I say I cannot speak about my love for someone it is out of respect for the other person. In fact, I do speak about my love all the time. But it is important that the society that surrounds this person not know or, knowing, not make it an issue. It is one reason I live far far away.

Does this person know? Of course! My actions scream it. My words proclaim it. But ... we don't talk about it. Our 'silence' keeps other relationships: family, friends, job intact. The silence keeps interference from others to a minimum. The silence allows us to have a relationship, albeit not one that is as close as I would like it to be. Perhaps that will be dealt with some day, hopefully at a proper time and in a proper way.

Until then, do not ask me for details or speculate in my presence. Rather, let your imagination wander through literature. There are many examples of all kinds of relationships that were thwarted by individuals or society or the 'insanity' of the two people themselves. As a teenager, one of my favorite books was 'Wuthering Heights'. Dear Emily Brontë was darkly warped, wasn't she?

If you must dwell on this then it is time to write a fictionalized account of a relationship from your own life. There are few among us who have not been hurt by unrequited love. Many of you write about it in your blogs and journals all the time. If you write it well enough, there is even a market out there where you can drown your sorrows in the monetary rewards of a best-seller.

Money won't heal any wounds. But it does buy a hell of alot of salve and bandages. *Smile*

*Leaf2* IMAGES

The scatter of light from streetlamps thru the mist on my glasses; drift of leaves after the fall; the glide of a leaf to wet pavement; the silent carousal; the well lit passage to the parking lot; purple stems of Moses-in-the-cradle; dark red blooms of chrysanthemum; a man carrying a large bed roll; the breeze freshing around the corner.

*Leaf4* MY LIFE

Sucks! I was woken up a tad too early and stumbled around for awhile but didna do much.

Finally went out to Borders and finished reading Murakami's novel, "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles". It was strange and fascinating.

The weather was beautiful today but I din't have the energy to get out and enjoy it. This evening I'll find some coffeeshop to sit in and write in my journal and work on some Than-Bauk to send to Alfred in Paris.

*Leaf5* HOCKEY/BASEBALL

My Sabres are dancing! 10-0-0 in the first ten games and looking forward to playing Atlanta at home on Saturday to set a record.

Cards or Tigers? I lean towards the Cards. As an Oriole fan I tend to be partial to birds. *Laugh* I was just glad it wasn't the Mets (I have a loooong memory and haven't forgiven them yet) or the Yankees (where I'm from you're either for or against them. Us Orioles and Tiger fans vote NO!).

*Leaf1* POULET? YOU CALL THIS POULET?

alfred booth, wanbli ska complained about not receiving any poems. I don't know whether this counts (keep in mind Alfred is a musician):

Quartet for Strings

         for Alfred

Let your bow ply long high notes
or stroke them smooth and mellow.
Caress my supple outstretched neck;
pluck the strings of my cello. [163.399a]
