A Snake Shedding Its Skin
A Snake Shedding Its Skin

I feel my lungs expand,
and contract,
and expand again,
as they push against concepts
that bind and constrict,
concepts that are too small
or limiting
for my new maturity.

Rubbing my nose
against the stones of reality,
I loosen
t he dead scales
of my illusions;
thus beginning
the process of elimination.

Rib by rib
I cast off
the dead skin
of yesterday's fear.

Rib by rib
I crawl
out of my prejudices.
(2 Sharaf 154 B.E.)

About this poem: This poem was written or completed on January 1, 1998. Part of the inspiration for this poem (I think) was a nature program of some kind.
