Why So Many Fish?
I looked at my son and could see him begin to squirm under my scrutiny.

"Do you really expect me to believe that?" I asked in a voice so calm I could see him fold before me.

"Well..." he began, not as confident. His eyes tilted down to the floor and his feet shuffled giving himself away further.

"David. You need to tell me the truth. I am more upset when you lie to me... and I know you are not telling me the whole truth."

"Well we did go to Baker's Lake."

"I'm sure you did... but," I waited him out. My eyes never left his face and I could see the burn ride up from his shoulders.

He pursed his lips, then folded them back in biting down in contemplation.

"It was Harvey that brought the dynamite."

My stomach leapt. But instead of giving into that startling comment, I took a breath and eased it out, waiting for more.

David's head sunk even more. "Danny lit it."

My heart flipped, then raced. I bit my bottom lip to keep from letting my own shock surface.

"I only tossed it in the lake to put the thing out."

A curl of laughter bubbled up and I stomped it down. This was no laughing matter. But now at least I knew how they got all those fish.

"They just popped up and we couldn't leave them there."

"Well..." I said after a moment. "Get to cleaning. I guess we're having fish tonight. And next time, David..." He looked up at me with solemn eyes. "Just use a pole. We are going to be eating fish for a week."
