The Power of Words
"The Power of Words

Today's Christian blog entry is from Rhoswen - Relentless Victory and is a powerful lesson about our tongues.

The Bible says so much about the power of our words. Yet even today, many of us don’t pay attention to what comes out of our mouths. It’s something God has been working on with me for a while now. And while I’m getting better about watching what I say, I will be the first one to admit that I still have a long way to go, especially when I am angry or frustrated about a situation.

Proverbs 10:19 says, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Proverbs 17:27 says, “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”

One of the things I try to remember when I’m choosing my words is the following:

Is it helpful? Is what I am about to say going to help the other person’s understanding? Is it going to help them look at things in a different way?

Is it encouraging? Is what I’m about to say going to lift the other person up or tear them down? Is it going to show compassion? Is it going to encourage a change if change is necessary?

Is it necessary? Is what I want to say even necessary? Does it need to be said, or is silence the better part of valor?

Another thing I like to reflect on when choosing my words is similar to that catch phrase, “What would Jesus do?” However, I change it slightly to ask myself, “What would Jesus SAY?”

Proverbs 18:21 states, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

As Christians, we are commanded to love others as we love ourselves, and one way we show that love is through our words. Think about this and begin to watch how your words change your life – and the lives of those around you.
