Prompt 2: Piggy-back rides and childhood dreams. ~ Story

Town Kids
The dreams of yesteryear are so very far away. I do not remember those as times of giggles and sunshine. I have snapshots that survived the years, and they are a mishmash of distorted images. I remember trying to get under an electric wire and having it shock my forehead because I would bob my head up and down when trying to crawl under it. I remember falling in the creek and having to spend the rest of the day in swamp water drenched clothing. And other moments of faces stamped in time, either laughing, scared or confused. All coalescing to provide proof positive that we were not good enough.

As the years slid by, I remember working hard on the farm and being envious of the town kids for getting to do all the fun things.

“Dad, can we go trick or treating?”
“No, that’s for town kids.”
“Mom, can I go to the football game?”
“No, that’s for town kids.”
And the list goes on. We were farm kids – not good enough for those fun things.

What possible incentive was there for us to want to stay on the farm when the only thing we had to look forward to was the piggy back rides and mucking out their stalls?

Oh, yes, the town kids got a fake piggy back rides. They got their dad to hoist them up and run around. My dad and mom had the real thing. Why would they want to lug a bunch of kids around on their back when they had Martha out there ready, willing and able? Martha was a real pig. She never could get a decent litter of piglets, but she tried. She always tried. I remember Martha. One of the few memories that avoided the slippery slope of memories relegated to the void.

Is there any wonder that the one driving lucid dream was to move to a town only? Is there any wonder I can remember almost every single year of my college days? The dream was fulfilled and proven. The town kids did have more fun.
