Christmas Eve

This night I jam with Mary,
yes, that one, mother and virgin.
She had no midwife, no myrrophore
to help her birth, to help her babe latch on
just dour Joseph.
Did he know to cut the cord
to bury the placenta
to rub her belly with lavender and cardamom
her skin hungry for sun and soft things.
This night I celebrate
safe passage for them all.
