Cold Comfort
It was the softest of nights.
The sky shook itself out
in an erratic flurry of shredded clouds
that settled upon the shivering trees
in cold, misguided sympathy.

The morning sky cracked open
as the sun ignited on the horizon
and stretched out its arms.
The trees, robbed of their cottony covering
are once again cold and ashamed of their naked state.
