Twins Separated by Birth

I was told I was named after my mother’s friend. But she never mentioned that friend, ever, in conversation over the years. I always thought that curious.

I never liked my name. I always wanted to be called Mary, or Susie, or Kathy. Norma seemed too strange, too out of the ordinary. No one I knew had that name. Then I had the unfortunate nickname of Normie. Ick. Maybe that explains my reluctance to call people by nicknames.

It took me years to accept my name. I never thought of changing it. I could have, once I reached the age of an adult, I guess. But then I found out Marilyn Monroe’s real name.

So I’ve decided I am a descendant of Marilyn Monroe. After all, her original name was Norma Jeane. Norma Jeane Mortenson.

But unlike Marilyn Monroe, I have finally accepted my given name. My husband calls me Norma Jean all the time. I love my name now. It's unique. Just like me.
