Abstractions, dear Bard

"Blogging Circle of Friends "  prompt for DAY 3145: Use these words in your prompt today: theory, anticipated, road, motion, and celebration.

Abstractions

Supposedly abstractions are a higher level of intelligence... until your water pipe bursts and you need to hire a plumber.

These words are mostly abstract.

Road however can be quite 'concrete', but be wary of the potholes.

Roads make good prompts for writers. Lots of metaphors. Lots of rhymes. Simple word learned by a 4 year old, as in "Don't cross the road!" Usually this is screamed.

Anticipated isn't a bad word but at 5 syllables it can be a bit long. Planned, due, hoped-for are shorter and easier to grasp. If a character is anticipating something why not show it? "He sat their shaking until he was hugged." Anticipation? Isn't that an old song? (1971)

Theory? Evolution is a scientific theory. The Theory of Poetry depends on when/where. Both lead to great discussions, arguments and worse. But theory isn't concrete. You can't use any of the 5 senses to describe it.

Celebration has plenty of rhyming sisters and brothers and it's a common word but "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to..." works just as well. In poetry you'll need to be able to spare 4 syllables. As 'anticipation' has a sense of 'hope', 'celebation' seems to be linked with 'joy'. Showing joy and hope in a concrete way is better than longer fancy words imho.

Ah, motion. Without movement there is no life. As I sit here barely moving due to the heat this week, I'll try to remember that. But it is a common word and concrete, short and has lots of rhyme. Although, what kind of motion is much better. The motion of a worm, a robot, a fan or a ghost tend to differ.


Not in ideas but in words = concrete trumps abstractions.

Not in words but in deeds = brings buds to fruition.

Better concrete words and actions.
