Kereru
Kereru,
I hear you flying.
I see the green and purple
and a flash of white before you rest.
You nibble on the berries
and softly you coo,
"kereru".

Septet. Written 13 September 2012.

A kereru is the New Zealand pigeon, endemic to New Zealand. They are very noisy fliers, and you can hear the woosh, woosh of their wings as they fly. They coo just like pigeons, and the Maori people thought the noise sounded like 'kereru' hence the name.
