:: Sitewide Search Engine Optimization ::
Since the start of 2004, we've been making improvements to Writing.Com
that make its pages easily read by search engines and directories such as
Yahoo! and Google. These sites have always read and indexed the content
of Writing.Com's pages, as they do with all other online venues, but over
time, their methods for ranking page content changes. Our site's page
design had not been recently updated to take into account newer search
engine technology. That means the pages were search engine unfriendly.

We updated the HTML of our standard page headers and each item's HTML
now includes tags that provide the search engine an item's brief description
and keywords as entered by the item's author. A major technical change was
made to the way pages are linked within the site. In most cases, Item URLs
previously included ?'s and &'s. The URLs are now more consistent and
easier for search engines to deal with. For example:

The changes will improve Writing.Com's online visibility and bring more
readers and writers to join in. If, for any reason, you'd like to avoid allowing
search engines to index your items, simply set the Access Restrictions on
your item to anything other than Public to everyone. Since a search engine
can't setup an account, that setting blocks it from indexing the item.


:: Portfolio Export Tool ::
The new Portfolio Export area provides members with the means to export
a large portion of their portfolio quickly and easily. Available to those with
Basic Memberships and higher, the system combines Static Items, Books
(with all of their entries/chapters) and WebPage Items into one textarea that
can be quickly copied and pasted into a new file on your computer.

The Portfolio Export tool can be found in your Author Tools pull down menu.

all work directly on your computer and then upload the work to Writing.Com.
Doing this helps to ensure that your first drafts and/or changes are never
lost in a connection error between our web site and your computer.
