Perhaps I Went Too Far

I once chose to dress like a slender splendor,
But soon I became just an over-spender.
Thus, I firmly established a plan of adherence,
To purchase my clothing less trendy in style,
Down in the basement, in the half-priced aisle.
Rummaging through all the things marked clearance,
I strengthened my legs chasing the blue light sale.
My arms grew strong fighting those who were frail,
Which I suppose affected my overall appearance.

My boyfriend declared me a genuine cheapskate.
Then my mother said, "You are putting on weight."
My shrink analyzed it as my soul’s unrest.
My father told them all, “Just leave her alone,
For there’s more to life than the clothes you own."
(With a papa like that, I was surely blessed!)
I kept my money, though my dresses filled with snags,
And my costume became a little bit like rags.
Finally even Dad said I didn’t really look my best.

Then I journeyed one day clear across the town,
Thinking I was fine in my old, brown gown.
When a pretty little girl in a new, attractive dress
Handed me a dollar before she turned and said,
“Poor street woman,”(Which turned me very red.)
“How did it happen you ended in this mess?”
I opened up my mirror, pressing back a sob,
Wondering how I’d slid into being such a slob,
When all I'd needed was to spend with less excess.

Note: Okay, this isn't really a true story, but it was fun to make up! LOL
