SHE WAS NOT LIFE BUT DEATH: a sonnet
SHE WAS NOT LIFE BUT DEATH: a sonnet

In my life she came like a ray of hope,
A wisp of fresh breeze in a stagnant space,
As if, for drowning man, to catch a rope.
I was faceless, she had a pretty face!

She brought life to my dull and rotting life;
She filled it with a happiness unknown.
She brought serenity in place of strife;
With happy smiles she did replace my groan.

I know not truly what later transpired.
Why did I earn, full of poison, her ire?
Her face, no more pretty, no hope inspired.
The cool and sweet turned into hellish fire.

As I lay stabbed waiting for my last breath,
I realized, not life, but she was death.
