Henry the Butterfly
This story is meant for the littlest ones. Its writing is simple and easy for beginning readers.

Henry the Butterfly

Henry was a butterfly.

He flew from flower to flower.

He flew through the clouds.

He flew through the trees.

He flew everywhere.

And he was very happy. *Smile*

But one day Henry woke up.

He scratched his head.

He stretched his little arms.

He wiggled his feelers.

“Oh!” cried Henry.

“I can’t remember how to fly!” *Confused*

Henry flapped his wings, but he couldn’t fly.

He shook his feelers, but he couldn’t fly.

He wiggled his legs, but he still couldn’t fly.

“What am I going to do?” cried Henry. *Shock*

Henry called to his friend.

Mr. Blue Jay , please tell me how to fly.

I can’t remember how.” *Worry*

Mr. Blue Jay shook his head.

He flapped his wings.

He cried out, “Just watch me.”

Then he flew away.*Yawn*

Henry shook his head.

He flapped his wings,

And then he tried to fly.

But nothing happened. *Confused*

Henry called out to another friend.

Mr. Squirrel, how do you fly?

I can’t remember how.” *Worry*

Mr. Squirrel laughed.

“I can’t really fly, Henry.

I just glide.

Watch me.” *Wink*

Henry watched.

The squirrel kicked off.

Its tail went up.

Its body flattened,

And it glided. *Wink*

“Oh, no,” said Henry.

He looked down at his body,

He didn’t have a fluffy tail.

He couldn’t glide. *Cry*

Henry called to another friend.

Mrs. Robin, please tell me how to fly.

I can’t remember how.” *Worry*

Mrs. Robin shook her head.

She preened her feathers

And pulled one out.

Then she flew away. *Wink*

“Oh,” said Henry.

Henry looked for his feathers.

But he had no feathers.

He sighed sadly. *Cry*

Then he saw someone he didn’t know.

“Hello,” said Henry. “Who are you?” *Confused*

“I’m a Sarah,” the bu tterfly said.

“I heard what you asked the others.

You can’t fly

Because your wings are wet.

Wait until the S U N dries them.” *Smile*

Henry thanked the beautiful bu tterfly.

Then he walked over to sit beside her.

Together they watched the S U N come up.

Then they waited for the warm, drying air. *Cool* *Cool*

“Ah,” said Henry. “The S U N feels so good.”

“Yes,” said Sarah. “Let’s turn around.”

In a while their wings were dry. *Blush* *Blush*

Then the two bu tterflie s

Fluttered their wings,

And off they flew.*Smile* *Smile*

They flew from flower to flower.

They flew through the clouds.

They flew through the trees.

They flew everywhere .

And they were very happy. *Bigsmile* *Bigsmile*
