Horror in the Night: A Child's Poem
A child wakes in the night and is scared by the storm.
Horror in the Night: A Child’s Poem
The clock strikes midnight; the wind’s blowing loud.
Claws are clacking and clicking across the floor!
A scream bottles up deep inside my throat.
It erupts the very moment I look to see. . .
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I screech,
But it’s only my dog scratching a flea.
The wind’s blowing loud; there’s a gale outside,
And someone is scratching at my windowpane.
Maybe it’s a witch, and she’s trying to enter.
I try not to shiver. I try not to quake. . .
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I screech,
But it’s only a tree limb rubbing the glass.
There’s a gale outside; the tree limbs are swaying.
What’s that thump I hear, outside the house?
It’s a ghost who’s fallen, a lonely ghost.
Maybe he’s coming to steal me away . . .
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I screech,
But it’s only the crack of a broken-off branch.
The tree limbs are swaying: there’s a very strange light,
And I think that it’s floating and getting real close.
I’m sure it’s the eye of a terrible monster,
One with teeth even sharper than a towering T-rex!
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I screech,
But it’s only my mom out getting the paper.
The clock strikes one; the wind’s blowing loudly,
But I snuggle down under my warm woolen blanket.
My teddy lies closely; he’s not very brave,
So I tuck him up tight and kiss him goodnight.
“Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” I whisper,
"There’s a gale outside, but we’re safe and sound."
