An English Tanka is shorter than the Japanese Tanka but the rhythm is the same. There are only 13 syllables total with no required rhyme or meter.

The syllable scheme is as follows:

Line 1: 2 syllables
Line 2: 3 syllables
Line 3: 2 syllables
Line 4: 3 syllables
Line 5: 3 syllables
