The Mississippi and Me Chapter One

If the Mississippi River could talk what would it whisper and what would it shout? I was walking by the Mississippi river the other day and it whispered and cooed and I thought I heard it crooning. She belted out those old familiar melodies of Jazz and blues and then she told me a story to the tune of Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. As I listened closely, I also heard songs from the cotton field and songs of woe. I stopped and I sat down because I wanted to hear everything. I was happy that I packed a lunch and brought a blanket because the “Big Muddy,” could talk. She had me laughing and crying and singing and shouting and praying and dancing. I think that we became best friends that same day.
