Automatic By: Miranda Lambert
Automatic By: Miranda Lambert

This is one of my favorite songs as of last year. I am 59 years and these words hold a lot of meaning for me.

"Quarter in a pay phone,
Drying laundry on the line,
Watching Sun Tea in the window
Pocket watch for tellin' time
Seems like only yesterday I'd get a blank cassette
Record the country countdown cause I couldn't buy it, yet.

Hey, what ever happened to waiting your turn
doing it all by hand
Cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all seemed so good the way we had it
Back before everything was automatic.

If you had something to say
You'd write it on a piece of paper
Then you would put a stamp on it and they would get it three days later."

It seems like pay phones are no longer. Everyone has a cell or smart phone. I love my smart phone but in high school, we didn't have them. No texting. I wrote notes to my friends in school and my mother when I wasn't ready to talk to her in my teens. I taped a lot of songs on a blank cassette off the radio. I saved money on vinyl records even though I had a lot of them before video cassette players came out.

Grandma used a wringer washer and hung her clothes on the line. I love pulling clothes out of the wringer. That was fun. I like using a washer and dryer. I had a Swinger camera I took pictures with it and they developed instantly. Now, we have digitial cameras and our smart phones to take pictures with. We used typewriters then. I love using my keyboard and sending out e-mails and writing stories.

We used paper, pencils and books in school. Now, everyone studies and does homework on line. Pay checks are automatic and so is bill playing.

I love the video of "Automatic" where Miranda is in the attic and there is a Teddy Bear sitting on as chair and they show hand written letters. I love my Teddy Bears and I have valentines, letters and postcards I saved. It is so much easier to just send e-mails instead of snail mail. I survived without a computer and cell phone years ago but I have to admit I don't want to live without them now. It is nice to order on line but I still love to physically shop. A computer can't replace that.

I like getting my own gas. I love to read books on my Nook. I miss my life as a kid and teen but I am happy as an adult with my husband. I love watching movies on DVD. Years ago, you stayed home to watch your show. There was no DVD or VHS to record them.

Life is automatic now but we still have problems but that is life. Automatic technology does make life easier. Thank you, Miranda. I chose this song as my last song for the Song Challenge. I love watching the video of this song and I have happy memories I wouldn't trade before life became automatic. I hope you have enjoyed reading this.
