Secrets

In a forgotten room,
behind a rusted door,
lie the secrets of my mind.
I keep them hidden from the world;
hidden from myself.

They are dangerous, those secrets,
reminders of who I was,
and the darkness I am capable of.
I can never set them free.
They will consume me,
and set me back on the path
to my doom.

At times, I hear the rust creaking,
the hinges threatening to break away
under the strain of their weight.
I want to open the door,
dust the cobwebs away,
clean them out of my mind
forever.

But I am not strong enough,
and I obey the painted warning.
That door is my only protection,
a barrier between my past,
and my present.
They can never meet.

So I sneak by
as I reach deep inside
trying to discover myself.
I want to ignore them
forget they exist.

Hoping that one day
I'll destroy them
If they don't destroy me first.
