Grandpa used to send station wagons to drive us home. A couple of them were adequate enough, for some of us boys and girls used to run and enjoy the sweeping wind and the traffic-free roads with acres of sugar cane and paddy spreading on both sides. My grandparents lived in a sprawling homestead. You can imagine what it meant for us. It used to take two days to go around and find out the new additions to the place. There were three people who helped them in maintaining the household. Grandpa was a sociable person, so he had a wide circle of friends, dropping by and saying hello to the city crowd lodged in his house. My uncles were young bucks at that time. Presumably, they had their own girl friends and other occupations, which I am sure they never talked much about with their parents. My cousins and I had the greatest fun, going about the village, swimming in the wells, ponds and the waterfall, being welcome even at total strangers’ houses, playing
