Everyone loves, television station, hair salon, spiritual soul, too many interests, obstacles head on, direction we're heading.

Creation Saturday Poem

Everyone loves Saturday,
at least that's what I thought
growing up
in Blackwell, Oklahoma.

On Saturday
the local television station
showed cartoons
all morning long.

One Saturday
I gave myself a haircut
and hid
my beautiful reddish brown lock
under the Wards catalog.

On Monday
Mom took me to a hair salon
to have a professional
even out
my butcher job.

Sunday
was church day
we attended
the Southern Baptist Mission
in the Smelter Heights.

What did I learn in Sunday school?

Did I comprehend
that I,
like the rest of the human race,
had a spiritual soul?

Too many years have past
with too many interests
and distractions
to give concrete answers
to those questions.

In the intervening decades
I learned to confront
obstacles head on
and that God
sometimes decides
to change the direction we're heading.
