Cottonwood Memories

I keep writing poems
about the cottonwood tree
that grew
in my grandparents front yard.

Some of the poems
are childhood memories
viewed
from my adult mind and emotions.

Others poems are pure fantasy,
with the cottonwood the only connection
to my childhood.

The tree was real,
it rough trunk testifying
to its age and wisdom.

Grandpa constructed
a wooden bench
around the ancient trunk,
so that
on hot summer days
his precious grandchildren
could sit and sip
sweet tea.

In fall
I would sit
watching Grandpa rake leaves
into piles
so that we could jump
into them
before he put them
into the metal barrel
to burn.
