🥇 All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve
A daily winner for October 2nd

The sun has gone; now comes the dark
as pumpkin eyes begin to glow.
Each grotesque smile, an evil mark,
announces goodies to bestow.

Soon phantom shuffling’s heard outside
as ghosts and witches all draw near.
The porchlight, like a moon, will guide
these creatures forward without fear.

The front door opens ‘neath their spell
of “trick or treat.” I can’t resist
and watch as bags of caramel
vanish and yet, they still persist!

Now gummi bears and Milky Ways
and Twizzlers seem to disappear.
I stand there, seemingly for days
until, at last, the sidewalk’s clear.

I look and there, inside the bowl,
a single remnant lies alone.
I grasp the lonely Tootsie Roll
intending it to be my own.

“Twick o Tweet!” A young child’s voice
drifts through the darkness like a mist.
My spirit flags. I have no choice.
A Pink Princess. I can’t resist.

I close the door, turn off the light.
All Hallows Eve is now no more.
My wife says what I did was right …
so I won’t tell what’s in the drawer!
