déjà vu : see again
let me see again.
let my eyes open wide
to drink in the beauty around me,
the color of a hibiscus,
the majesty of an oak
standing tall and golden
against the sky.

let me see again—
let me look into the soft brown eyes
of a puppy, the cool blue
of my lover who sees me
like no other woman in the world.

let me see again.
let me gaze into a mirror
and remember the lines of laughter
the lines of pain, and
connect them again with memory.

let my eyes regain
their innocence and see as though
everything was new—too long
have my eyes been dark
with age and cynicism
and grief and pain.

I miss those eyes.
