Bicycle Memories

Was he bicycle
a birthday or Christmas present?
Being a Christmas Eve baby,
I'm not sure it really matter
when I received the bike.

I remember learning
to balance and peddle
at the same time
after a few skinned knees.

The bike had training wheels
to help me balance,
and learn to ride at the same time.

Did I skin my knees
before or after
the training wheels were removed?

Rumbling echoes
memories of my sister
hugging the Cocker spaniel.

Flashes of lightning
memories of the power
going out and sitting in the dark.

Tornado sirens
echoing through the darkness
we waited in the root cellar
for the all clear.
