Who Am I?
My body felt heavy, like it was not my own. Pain enveloped me. My head throbbed. There was a buzz of anxious voices around me.

I tried to open my eyes, but blinding light had me slamming them shut.

"She's awake!" I heard a woman say. Her shrill voice hurt my ears.

"Darla?" a soothing male voice said.

I turned my head towards that sound, but thought 'Who the hell was Darla?'

"Darla, baby. Wake up!" the shrill voice said and I felt hands jostle me.

"Don't touch her like that Martha. Remember what the Doc said...."

"Oh, hush Harold. This is my baby. Darla, baby. Wake up!"

I moaned at her touch and was glad when it stopped.

A warm hand ran across the furrow of my brow, "It's okay Darla." the soothing male voice said.

Behind closed lids I let my mind wander through my body. The heaviness remained, but so did the overwhelming pain. I let out a gasp.

"She needs more painkillers." the shrill voice said.

"The nurse is coming." the gentle voice said.

When I opened my eyes everything was blurry, distorted. I looked to the man with the soothing voice. He was unfamiliar to me. I stared at him blankly as he managed a weak smile.

"Who are you?" I asked weakly.

"Honey, that's Ralph." Again the shrill voice.

I glanced at an older man beside Ralph. "Hey, Sweetheart."

My brow remained furrowed. 'Who were these people?'

"I see our young patient is awake."

"She doesn't remember Ralph... her own husband." The shrill voice wailed.

I looked over at the man with the white coat. He nodded, looking serious. "There could be some memory loss. Darla has suffered a serious trauma. She is lucky to be alive."
