Miss A. Liddell [175.243]
Miss A. Liddell

She did this and then this...
thinking of that, thinking of this.
Her bare feet kept her glued to the dirt;
her fears propelled her.

One cup out of place...
The World, her world, would surely...
go down a hole.

The Table was set:
two cups and a tea-kettle.
The Cat with a bat in his silly Hat
would soon appear.

She was sure of that.
He always knew the exact worst moment.
She breathed in...
she breathed out...
felt the calm of certitude surround her.

She went to fetch the saucers,
dropped one
as she heard the knock on the door.
Right on time.

The Cat grinned and sang out her name.
Alice... Alice... are you home?

As if there were a doubt.

She was always home.

After that affair with Mr. White-Rabbit,
a trip to that Quack of a Caterpillar,
an audience with the Queen of the Chop-shop...

She... Alice... she...
NEVER LEFT HOME.

Historical note: Alice Pleasance Hargreaves (née Liddell (/ˈlɪdəl/[1]); 4 May 1852 – 16 November 1934) was, in her childhood, an acquaintance and photography subject of Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). One of the stories he told her during a boating trip became the children's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Although she shared her name with the heroine of the story, scholars disagree about the extent to which the character was based upon her. She married cricketer Reginald Hargreaves, and they had three sons.
