Roses:
To Tahirih1

Roses
are the favorite flowers
of nightingales
and martyrs.

Perfumed
with attar of roses
and dressed in white,
Tahirih--
escorted by
troops--
walked into the garden
where her executioner
strangled her with a scarf
and threw her body into a well.

Do nightingales sing
above the well
where Tahirih's bones
now lay?
