January 8, 2020 A Christmas Story
PROMPT January 8th

Every Christmas my brother and I would go on a hunt for hidden Christmas presents before the big day. We got pretty good at finding, unwrapping, then rewrapping gifts. We were actually in our teens when we went on our last hunt and found a locked suitcase in the back of their closet. We picked the lock and sure enough, there were wrapped gifts.

My brother had asked for an onyx ring for Christmas. One similar to my Dad's. We found a small box that surely held his ring and I helped him carefully open it. Inside was a cheap, dimestore, God awful piece of junk jewelry. His face just dropped. How was he going to show surprise and delight on Christmas morning when he opened this disappointment in front of our parents? We abandoned our quest and spent hours debating and then rehearsing how he should react when the time came for him to open it in front of Mom and Dad.

Christmas morning came and he was handed his ring box by my Mom wearing a big smile. I watched while he opened it exactly as we had rehearsed, but instead of the dimestore ring, there was the onyx ring he had asked for. We were both shocked, he didn't know how to react. My parents had set us up and were rolling in laughter. I don't even remember what I got that year. It was all about that stupid ring. He still has it.
