Finally! I've got something to write about besides my self-pity!

day 24-5 years
Five years from now I will be moving on to a stage of adulthood I'm not sure I'm prepared for: empty nester.

This may be a little overdramatic, to be specific, two of my three will be of age to be in college by then- my "baby" will be 14. If what's going on with my current 14-year-olds is any indication of what to expect, I may as well be a full-fledged empty nester, 'cause he'll have s*** to DO that doesn't necessarily include me. Also, we've timed it so our house will be paid off that year, and that just seems to punctuate the finality of raising children in my house.

This is assuming we're not all living off shoe leather in another depression, or we've mortgaged the house to pay for medical bills from the coronavirus I will so selfishly have contracted, or will be raising one of my son's kids born out of wedlock, or will need to house people who've lost theirs in the great alien invasion... it's all so uncertain, right?

The truth is the only thing I can say about five years from now is I've got no idea what is going to happen. I can point my actions in a direction and hope the rest of my life follows the way but even that's not particularly realistic, mainly because I suck at doing that whole "planning your work, working your plan" thing. Despite my best intentions, I just don't have the self-discipline.

Five years from now I hope everyone is healthy, people are getting along better, fewer people are starving to death, and we're all evolving upward and onward. I'm not willing to teach my to-be 14-year-old how to club women over the head to mate with them, or sling insults if he wants to be president.
