"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 21

"Anyone"
by Justin Bieber

Full Lyrics

I have a love-hate relationship with Justin Bieber. Which is to say that I mostly hate him, but I occasionally hate myself for loving one of his songs. Every so often he does manage to come up with a really good song that I find myself listening to on repeat, and this is the most recent one of those songs. I definitely think he's matured as an artist (and only moderately so as a human being), but it's still hard to admit that I actually like a Justin Bieber song in public. Still, I can't deny that ballads like this tend to find their way onto my playlists from time to time.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 20

"Lost"
by Blake Rose

Full Lyrics

Blake Rose is an interesting artist for me because I actually don't like a lot of his other songs. Usually when I like an artist, I find a handful of songs that I like and listen to after coming across a first song that really speaks to me. In this case, I really, really dig this song, but that's about it. I've tried at least a half a dozen other songs by Blake and I'm not just that into them. Maybe he'll come out with something else that really connects with me but for right now he's a one-hit wonder on my current playlists.

"My Heart Won't Let Me"
by LANY

Full Lyrics

I found LANY on Spotify when I recently started looking for other artists like A R I Z O N A and The Band CAMINO. They popped up with a number of different songs and I've been listening to them a lot lately. I enjoy a good alternative rock love song and these guys have some pretty catchy songs. I haven't listened to a wide variety of their songs yet, though, (just the couple I already know I like), so I think I'm due for a deep dive through their discography at some point.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 18

"Unconditionally"
by Katy Perry

Full Lyrics

Bonus points for squeezing a six-syllable word into multiple places in a song and making it sound melodic. *Laugh*

I'm "hot n cold" on Katy Perry (bad pun intended). Sometimes she does songs that I think are pretty unoriginal and, while catchy, not particularly memorable... and at other times she does songs like this one that just somehow strike a chord with me and are something that I end up listening to for weeks and weeks and weeks. I found this song while listening to a playlist of similar songs and haven't been able to stop listening to it since. The music video is also gorgeously shot.

"Gonna Get Over You"
by Sara Bareilles

Full Lyrics

This is an older song, off Sara Bareilles' 2010 album Kaleidoscope Heart (which I still think is her best album). This song showcases a lot of her strength as a songwriter, combining catchy melodies with really sophisticated lyrics. Honestly, other than maybe Taylor Swift, I think Sara Bareilles is probably one of the most talented singer/songwriters of her generation. She always manages to write complex, evocative lyrics that seem really effortless when she sings them. This is one of the music videos that my kids love to watch over and over again, and I haven't gotten tired of the song yet, which is really saying something given how many times they've asked me to watch it. *Laugh*

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 16

"Remind Me To Forget"
by Kygo feat. Miguel

Full Lyrics

I almost went with one of Kygo's 80s remixes (his version of "Higher Love" with Whitney Houston and "What's Love Got To Do With It" with Tina Turner are both regularly on my playlists), and I actually started writing an entry about his collaboration with Sasha Sloan ("I'll Wait"). But this song has been speaking to me a lot lately and I really try not to do any repeats during "The Soundtrack of Your Life. I can always appreciate a great voice paired with a savvy DJ/electronic music producer, and I think this song really capitalizes on the strength of both.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 15

"long story short"
by Taylor Swift

Full Lyrics

I still can't get over the fact that Taylor Swift dropped not one, but two unplanned albums in 2020. It's a really remarkable accomplishment, and while these two albums aren't necessary my favorites, there are a few songs on each of them that I think are really great and accentuate her talents as a songwriter. Even without a full studio production backing her, she writes affecting, catchy songs. This one is off her second album (evermore) and is probably my favorite from that album, although a few others like "willow" and "'tis the damn season" are good too.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 14

"Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)"
by Jason Derulo & Jawsh 685

Full Lyrics

I'm a sucker for a catchy song that causes a fun social media trend. This song reminds me a lot of "Gagnam Style" from PSY a few years ago where it just absolutely blew up and you could find people posting videos of themselves dancing to it absolutely everywhere. And who knows if it'll actually have any staying power or will fade away once the new trendy song pops up, but in the meantime this is a fun one to add to my playlists where I can just enjoy a song that makes me want to dance.

Jason Derulo is a hugely underrated artist, in my opinion. He's a great dancer and has a number of, if not great, than at least really catchy, really well-produced songs. I've been listening to him since "In My Head" and "Ridin' Solo" off his debut album, and each successive album he releases usually has at least one or two songs that I listen to for a decent amount of time.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 13

"Light On"
by Maggie Rogers

Full Lyrics

I could have honestly put any Maggie Rogers song from her Heard It In A Past Life album. All of the songs are great and it's honestly a serious contender for the album that I'm going to use for Musicology Anthology this year. Every song is soulful, but each one has a distinctly different sound and really compelling lyrics. She might be one of my favorite new artists that I've discovered in the past six months, and her entire album is featured on just about all of my current playlists.

"The Soundtrack of Your Life | Day 12

"Lean"
by VHS Collection

Full Lyrics

VHS Collection is another of the artists (like A R I Z O N A and The Band CAMINO) that I recently discovered and had a hard time picking just one song to feature because I've been listening to a whole bunch of different songs by them and I like a whole bunch of them. I almost went with "Waiting on the Summer" or "Sign" but ultimately picked this one because it was the song that first introduced me to the band. I think it might've been from an episode of SHAMELESS.

I really dig their retro sound; it's modern, but often feels like I'm listening to a song with 80s influences, which is the music I grew up listening to.
