Prologue: I am Pelenghast of the house Danveron from the city of Sacharim of the lands of Serniah. I have lived the past twenty-two years of my life in relative peace, but then peace rarely makes for good storytelling. However I am not without my share of stories. I will start at the beginning, some two hundred and four years ago while I was still a pupil of Shekien of the house of Caroch. Those were the days that I suffered from one of the great maladies of youth, namely the knowledge that I knew everything and the fact that I didn't. Training at the Arollas Academy prepares a person to deal with matters of the world, the intrigues of governments and peoples, But not matters of the heart. I grew up learning how people think and react to each other so that I might better advise whichever Kul took me into his service, but not how to react to the wiles of a fascinating and intelligent woman. Her name was Kiana and she was the ambassador of the Catari people from the great forest to the South. I remember the day I met her like it was yesterday. Master Shekien had been summoned before the Ka'an one a matter of great urgency and bade me to join him for the first time............. |
