This is a collection of my experiences playing basketball |

HIPPITY-HOOPING Game 3 I played my third basketball game last night. I’m pleased to say I never felt nervous. This is new to me since I’m usually a bag of nerves the night before something like this, and then stay on edge all day until it’s over. This time, I was just excited and even that didn’t happen until it was time to play. I’m a lot more relaxed and sure of myself on the court than I have ever been before. We had a larger team so I was able to sit out for an extra rest period; something that hasn’t happened before. The rests are only one or two minutes, and believe me, they go by fast. I'm amazed and humbled by the way some girls play the sport. Some of these women have been playing since they were tiny tots and it surely shows in their performance. In fact, a few players on our lowly team, albeit not as tall, nor as strong, are just as skilful as any man, professional or otherwise, and I'm not exaggerating. Linda’s daughters, Katie and Sarah, are so good, they could play for the entire team without any help from anyone else. Wherever the ball is, that’s where they are, no matter how quick they need to be. They pass, shoot, dribble, and play defence as well as any human being I've ever seen. Their balls inevitably reach their target time and time again. You can count on it. Alex, Vicky’s daughter, is also just as good. Since I arrived at the court miles early, while I was waiting for my chance to play, I was watching other teams practicing on the court. Just as I did last week, I gained a lot of insight and observed some techniques I can practice on my own at home. The thing that really got to me, though, is the way some female ‘jocks’ behave. They carry sports bags over their shoulders, which they hold as though they had cement blocks in their arms and across their backs, and swagger as if to say “I’m a basketball player. You can’t touch me! I’m the greatest!” What’s nice is to know is that the girls on our team who are really fabulous, don’t have to walk around as if they are God’s gift to sports, and are very feminine and humble about their skills. They’re actually quite shy and demure about it. Charming, really. The kind of girl you’d like to have as a neighbor living right next door. |
