Your post made me think that I write the memory as a poem and then a short story and then a novella and then the saga that it always becomes. :) Hey, there might be a poem in there somewhere. I'll go get a flashlight and check. :) Very provoking to my thoughts.

I reason that the quotes from her book are in italics. I don't understand a frigin' word!

I would have sent the book back to where it came from.

Yes, it is often too complicated to see the extended metaphor which is why I like this one. Seems clear to me to see the spiritual themes in the Hospital Window.

Extended metaphor is afterall simply an series of related imagery. You do this quite often yourself, Alfred, even if you don't realize it.

I agree with Joseph, it IS often difficult for the average reader to see writing from the writer's point of view. Of course, that why one takes an English Lit class, or specializes in it as you he done. to learn to see how good writing works in order to improve one's own skills.

You have written the exposition of a great essay here. Your examples serve your points perfectly. I wish I could write as well.
