‘We are the Black Thorns, Anna. Sweet and delicious inside, but we also know how to keep ourselves safe’
Late one night in 1976, Anna's mother takes off on her final 'walkabout', never to return. The loss of a solitary, half breed Aboriginal means little to the regional Australian steel mining town they live in, but it means everything to Anna.
Left alone to fend off her father's ever increasing advances and violent behaviour, Anna's only defence is to be seen and never heard. Her only escape is the secret bush hideaway that her mother helped her discover. It’s here that Anna finally begins to sort the truth from the lies.
As an adult, Anna has finally learnt the words to stop the violence and protect herself. With the words comes knowledge and with knowledge come questions. When Anna finds out the truth, it sets her off into an examination of her past. Her relationship with her father and his stoic German family come under fire and the resulting firestorm of emotions set to explode.
