I'll showcase a few paintings and describe the artist's thought process |

I've been an artist since I was old enough to hold a pencil, but I've only been a professional, as in paid, artist for 12 years. I am seduced by oil paint, although my studio is crammed full of pastels, acrylics, pencils and even clay. I've always had the creative itch and I can't control it. I'm driven to stay up all night working on a painting or writing a scene in my book all too often. As someone who still needs to 'keep my day job' it's not good to show up at work bleary eyed and woozy after a night of intense creating. I'm learning to control it, but it's not easy. When the muse strikes, we need to listen and go for it. Below is an image of Jessica, who posed for our life drawing group a few weeks ago. I painted this "alla prima" or all at once, in two hours. Later I added a few details at home, so the entire painting required about 3-1/2 hours. You might be wondering why I keep track of the time. I don't do this for every piece, but when I work from life I don't want to lose the freshness; I want the time I spent painting from the model to take precedence. It's easy to overwork a piece so I paint from memory and try to complete the details I didn't have time for during the pose, and I limit the time to an hour or two. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
