Two people investigate a terrifying government conspiracy involving the supernatural. |

Introduction This is a pilot script for a potential sci-fi/fantasy TV series, called 'Division Six'. I don't know if it would ever get made, or if I'll ever even try to get it made, but I still fancied writing at least one episode anyway. The basic pitch for the show is as follows: Division Six is a top-secret organisation that has 'not' existed since 1949, created by the United Nations but dominated by the British intelligence community, that investigates and contains paranormal and extra-terrestrial threats to the general public. They operate in total secrecy, with near-unlimited resources and no red tape. They are extremely good at what they do. They are the most powerful people in the world... ...and they're the bad guys. Cooper is a policeman in the sleepy British market town. Ennis is a journalist at an even sleepier local paper. When they encounter a confused and frightened man with an impossible background, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a shadowy and corrupt group obsessed with hoarding extraordinary creatures and artifacts, and will stop at nothing, not even mass murder, in order to silence those who know too much. Cooper and Ennis are forced to go on the run, and with the aid of a covert group of hackers and conspiracy theorists, they resolve to expose Division Six and break its grip on the human race. Along the way, they conduct their own investigations into the supernatural, seeking to keep potential weapons out of enemy hands, and to protect other innocents who cross their path. Cooper and Ennis are trying to bring light to a dark world. They're going to be very busy... That about sums it up, I think. As you can probably guess, the idea owes a lot to 'The X-Files': it's intended, at least in part, to be a commentary on the other shows that it inspired, such as 'Fringe' and 'Agents of SHIELD'. The former is about outsiders trying to expose the truth, whilst the latter are about insiders trying to hide the truth (the stated goal is always to 'protect the innocent', but the end result is the same): I find what this says about the direction our culture is heading in to be deeply troubling. 'Division Six' is, for my part, an attempt to swing the pendulum back in a more honest direction. I've never really tried screenwriting before, so I've no idea how well this will work. But I'm sure you'll all tell me one way or the another. That's why we post things here, right? |
