How long have you lived in Beijing and Los Angeles? Are there better choices? There are China Towns everywhere. I think of two I've visited: Toronto and Lima. Ancient books are portable; ancient knowledge even more so.

Regardless, can you make the setting detailed enough so that it feels authentic?

Just thoughts.

The idea that old myths can be relived in modern times is so ... Chinese! Or Korean. Gumiho = nine-tailed fox. This kdrama is highly rated (8.4):

"My roommate is a fairy fox" isn't as well done, but... it made me watch BL genre drama:

You'll find the opening similar to what you describe in that history and reality meet. It's worth watching if you have the time. The music is a bit of an earworm, just so you know.

That is a great pic! But I have a question about his weakness. Is he too "thrusting" or too "trusting"? I mean, there's a little bit of a difference.
