Tarrare, a young street performer in 18th century France, has a rather peculiar talent: he can – and will – eat just about anything, from his own weight in raw meat, to live animals, to even inanimate objects like stones or cookware. Rescued from a freak show by the mysterious Player King, Tarrare embarks upon a new career as an actor, but his ravenous appetite will take him beyond the stage to the battlefields of the Seven Years' War, the courts of imperial Prussia, and the dingy cells of a madhouse.
