I had read the prompt right before leaving for the office. The word was in my head when I pulled out of the driveway and a man was standing down the road with a paint roller in his hand. As I approached he waved me down and I recognized him as the middle son of my late best friend. He is in his 50s now but I've known him since he was 5 and pretty much helped raised him. In his 20s he got into heavily into drugs, was in and out of jail and actually spent some time in prison. He would clean up and stop in and see me occasionally then he was off again. He has now been sort of clean for probably 10 years maybe a little more. However he legally has grown marijuana for "medicinal purposes" most of those years. But he is off the hard stuff and has held down a couple of jobs and does handy man stuff for the locals. He just wanted to say hi and said that while he was painting the house down the road he noticed the gutter at the back of my house was coming loose and he wanted to let me know he would fix it for me today before he went home. I'm all he has left of his mother and we were always close. Once I came home from the office and he was in my house cooking an abalone dinner for me from his dive that morning. Anyway to make this very long story short, the poem challenge was in my head, then he was in my head the rest of the way to the office. Reminded of his long struggle with drugs it was nice to see him look healthy and productive, triumphant!
I just had to write the poem down when I got to the office and then trim it up a bit. I first used "junkie" in stead of "addict". But the words actually have different connotations and addict could refer to anything. Being the daughter of an alcoholic, drugs and alcohol were never options for me either.
